Common Range Rover Problems — And How We Fix Them
Real issues reported by Range Rover owners in Dubai. If your vehicle shows any of these symptoms, bring it in for a free diagnostic check.
⚠️ My Range Rover is sitting lower on one side or keeps dropping to the ground overnight — what's wrong? +
This is the air suspension failure — one of the most common and most misdiagnosed problems on the Range Rover L322, L405, and L494. The air suspension uses rubber air bags (air springs), an air compressor, height sensors, and a control module to maintain ride height. When the system fails, the vehicle drops — sometimes overnight, sometimes while driving.
Common causes:
- Perished or cracked air spring bags (very common after 5 years in Dubai heat)
- Failed air compressor — can no longer build enough pressure
- Leaking air lines or valve block solenoids
- Faulty height sensor giving wrong readings to the control module
Our fix: We use JLR PATHFINDER to identify exactly which corner and component has failed. We carry genuine Land Rover air springs and compressors in stock, so most repairs are completed same day. Do not drive the vehicle with a deflated air spring — it can damage the compressor and suspension arms.
⚠️ My Range Rover has an orange or red oil warning light on — engine is also ticking or rattling on startup +
This is a serious warning that should not be ignored. On the Range Rover 4.4L TDV8, 3.0L SDV6, and petrol V8 engines, a cold-start rattle combined with an oil warning light is often the timing chain tensioner failure or low oil pressure. Dubai's extreme heat accelerates engine oil degradation, making oil changes at the correct interval critical.
Common causes:
- Stretched or jumped timing chain — common on 3.0 SDV6 and 5.0 V8 engines
- Worn oil pump losing pressure at idle
- Sludge build-up from infrequent oil changes blocking oil galleries
- Failing variable valve timing (VVT) actuators
Our fix: We perform a full oil pressure test and engine scan before recommending any parts. Timing chain repairs on Range Rover are a specialist job — our technicians have completed hundreds of these. Stop driving immediately if the oil warning light is red — continued driving causes irreversible engine damage within minutes.
⚠️ My gearbox is jerking, slipping, or showing "Transmission Fault" on the dashboard +
The Range Rover Sport and Vogue use ZF 8-speed and ZF 6-speed automatic gearboxes. These are excellent units but are sensitive to overheating (very common in Dubai stop-start traffic) and old transmission fluid. A jerking or slipping gearbox is often not a full rebuild situation — it can frequently be resolved with a fluid service and module recalibration.
Common causes:
- Degraded transmission fluid (should be changed every 60,000 km in Dubai conditions)
- Faulty mechatronic unit inside the gearbox
- Worn clutch packs from overheating in heavy traffic
- Torque converter failure causing shudder at low speeds
- Gearbox control module software fault — often resolved with a software update
Our fix: We start with a full ZF gearbox diagnostic scan and a fluid condition check. Many customers who were quoted for a full gearbox rebuild at the dealer only needed a fluid flush and recalibration — saving AED 15,000–25,000.
⚠️ The AC is blowing warm air even on maximum cooling — or the AC stops working completely +
In Dubai's 45°C+ summer heat, a failing AC is not just uncomfortable — it's dangerous. Range Rover AC failures are common due to the dual-zone and four-zone climate control systems that have multiple components that can fail. The AC compressor is the most expensive single component and unfortunately one of the most commonly replaced on high-mileage Range Rovers.
Common causes:
- AC compressor failure — often preceded by a rattling noise from the engine bay
- Refrigerant leak from condenser or evaporator (hairline cracks from road debris)
- Blocked or contaminated expansion valve
- Failed blend motor (one side blows hot, the other cold)
- Low refrigerant from natural seepage — needs annual top-up in Dubai conditions
Our fix: We use a refrigerant recovery machine to check for leaks before adding any gas — recharging a leaking system is a waste of money. We carry both R134a and R1234yf refrigerants for all Range Rover models and can typically complete an AC service within 2–3 hours.
⚠️ Multiple warning lights are on — Hill Descent, Traction Control, ABS, and suspension faults all at once +
When multiple unrelated warning lights come on together — especially after rain, a car wash, or driving through a flooded road — the most common culprit is water ingress into an ABS wheel speed sensor or a faulty ABS control module. These sensors are mounted at each wheel and are exposed to the elements. One faulty sensor cascades alarms across all the systems that depend on wheel speed data.
Common causes:
- Corroded or damaged ABS wheel speed sensor (very common on older L322 and L320 models)
- Water in the ABS module connector — causes false fault codes across all safety systems
- Faulty steering angle sensor after a tyre change or alignment
- Weak battery causing multiple module faults (battery voltage below 12.2V triggers cascading warnings)
- Corroded ground points — especially on vehicles that have been through Dubai floods
Our fix: We read all modules simultaneously with JLR PATHFINDER to identify the root cause — not just the symptoms. Most multi-warning-light situations on Range Rover have a single underlying fault. We resolve the root cause rather than replacing parts one by one.
⚠️ My Range Rover is overheating or the temperature gauge keeps rising in traffic +
Overheating in Dubai traffic is a serious issue that can destroy an engine very quickly. The Range Rover's cooling system is complex, with an electric water pump on newer models and a thermostat that is a known failure point across several engine families. Never ignore a rising temperature gauge — pull over and call us immediately.
Common causes:
- Failed thermostat stuck closed — very common on 3.0 SDV6 and 5.0 V8 engines
- Electric water pump failure on 2013+ models (no mechanical pump to fall back on)
- Cracked or swollen coolant hoses from Dubai heat cycles
- Air lock in the cooling system after improper coolant flush
- Head gasket failure — often caused by a previous overheating event that was ignored
- Blocked radiator from sand and debris accumulation
Our fix: We perform a cooling system pressure test, thermostat function test, and water pump flow test as a package. Catching a thermostat failure early costs AED 800–1,500. Ignoring it until a head gasket blows costs AED 12,000–25,000.
⚠️ There is white, blue, or black smoke coming from the exhaust +
Exhaust smoke colour tells you exactly what is burning inside your engine. Each colour points to a different problem — and the diagnosis changes completely depending on what you see.
- White smoke: Coolant entering the combustion chamber — blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. Common on 4.4 TDV8 engines. Requires urgent attention.
- Blue smoke: Engine oil being burned — worn piston rings, valve stem seals, or a failed turbocharger oil seal. Very common on high-mileage Range Rover Sports.
- Black smoke: Running too rich — excess fuel not being burned. Usually a faulty fuel injector, MAF sensor, or diesel particulate filter (DPF) issue on diesel models.
Our fix: We carry out a compression test, leakdown test, and injector analysis to pinpoint the cause before any parts are ordered. Turbo oil seal replacement on a Range Rover Sport diesel typically costs a fraction of a full engine rebuild if caught early.
⚠️ My Range Rover battery keeps dying — the car won't start in the morning +
Modern Range Rovers have 50+ electronic modules running continuously — even when parked. This creates a "parasitic drain" that can kill a weak battery overnight. Dubai's extreme heat also dramatically shortens battery life — a battery that lasts 5 years in Europe may last only 2–3 years here.
Common causes:
- End-of-life battery — heat degrades battery cells faster than cold climates
- Parasitic drain from a module that is not going to sleep (Ghost current draw)
- Faulty alternator not charging the battery while driving
- Corroded battery terminals causing poor charge acceptance
- A newly installed aftermarket accessory drawing power overnight
Our fix: We perform a battery health test, alternator output test, and a parasitic drain test (checking current draw with all modules asleep) before replacing anything. Important: Range Rover batteries must be registered to the vehicle's ECU after replacement — failing to do this causes the alternator to overcharge and shorten the new battery's life.
⚠️ Knocking or clunking noise when going over speed bumps or turning +
Dubai's speed bumps are unusually aggressive and frequent — this accelerates wear on suspension bushes, ball joints, and anti-roll bar links far faster than in other countries. A knocking sound from the suspension is almost never dangerous immediately, but left untreated it causes uneven tyre wear and eventually damages more expensive components.
Common causes:
- Worn front lower control arm bushes — extremely common on L322 and L320 models
- Failed anti-roll bar drop links (cheap to replace, very common)
- Worn front upper ball joints — causes vague steering feel as well as noise
- Worn rear differential mounting bushes — causes a thud under acceleration
- Loose or seized brake caliper causing knocking under braking
Our fix: We put the vehicle on a lift and physically inspect every suspension bush, link, and joint under load. Most bush replacements on a Range Rover take half a day and are significantly cheaper than the wheel alignment damage caused by driving on worn bushes for too long.
⚠️ The infotainment / InControl Touch screen is frozen, blank, or constantly rebooting +
The InControl Touch Pro system on 2016–2022 Range Rovers is notoriously problematic. Complaints range from a blank screen on startup to a system that continuously reboots every few minutes. This is a known issue that Land Rover has released multiple software updates for — many of which were never applied because owners were unaware.
Common causes:
- Outdated InControl software — Land Rover has released fixes via PATHFINDER
- Failed eMMC storage chip on the infotainment head unit
- Corrupted GPS map data causing the system to crash on boot
- Weak 12V battery causing brown-outs to the infotainment module
- Failed MOST bus communication between the head unit and amplifier
Our fix: We first attempt a software update via JLR PATHFINDER, which resolves the issue in approximately 40% of cases at zero parts cost. If the hardware has failed, we can replace the head unit or perform an eMMC chip replacement — a much more cost-effective solution than the dealer's standard "replace the entire unit" approach.
